About The Artwork

I live in Redhead, NSW, Australia and its beach is a constant inspiration for me with its wildness, strength and isolation. Although I’m not directly influenced by Jackson Pollock I do begin most of my paintings in a similar way. I intuitively throw the paint on the canvas and invariably the walls and floor with physicality and fearlessness. I then paint layer, upon layer of paint to build up the intensity of colour and colour combinations that I subsequently remove in part by sanding and scraping. This reveals a work that I believe has a presence of it’s own whereby I was merely the conduit. I mostly paint my experience of the landscape, not essentially what I see but what I feel when I am within it. I enjoy being alone and I quite often feel more at home in nature, alone, than in company. I like to bring home this sense of contentedness and belonging and attempt to portray this through my art. A piece is considered finished if I feel the exact same way while looking into my art as I would if I were directly in the landscape. I believe we are all connected to the earth in a spiritual sense but we have lost the ability to know and feel this truth. By metaphorically layering my human experience in multiple ways on the canvas I am referencing the artificial nature of ourselves, the societal conditions, fears, beliefs and habits all built up over a lifetime—obscuring the ultimate reality that is our true self and our oneness with all, especially the earth in which we inhabit.

Finalist in the Wynne Prize for 2016. I engage in art as an attempt to bypass the intellectual, to tear apart and peel back the self imposed veneer—almost brutally at times. And, with hope, reveal a consciousness that has no predetermined idea or thought sequence. I want to eliminate the falseness and limited intelligence of thought and expose the beauty and truth of feeling and absolute knowing which comes from the heart. The process I use is a metaphor for my own continual transformation. I begin my expression with excessively thick layers of paint and colour as representations of ego and identity. This process has no real basis in reality but is a construct of my beliefs— both cultural and personal. The initial layering of paint is a quick, reckless process tinged with fear, doubt and calculation, again a metaphor for life's moments...but it is the courage to remove the initial unconscious past that gives my art depth and connectedness. I then attempt to peel back these false layers using the often harsh, graceless process of elimination. This is where time consumes me—within the very physical process that is my transformational practice. Sometimes it is painful, and emotionally revealing. At other times it is joyful, passionate and tender. My ultimate desire is to connect, to myself primarily and to live and create without regret or fear of consequence.
