This is another vintage painting on board from the 1940s I bought in a now defunct thrift store in Atlantic City, New Jersey 15 years ago. It is a nude oil study painting of an older woman with grey hair. Unsigned. I decided to re-vamp the painting and make it my own. I used art deco paint pens. Being a feminist and over 50, one of my missions as a female artist is to explore the subject of women over 50, menopause and the role of older women in society. Frequently a woman over a certain age is considered undesirable and is frequently overlooked. In my opinion, I feel older women are wise and possess power they are not tapping into. The leaves in this painting represent growth. Although the woman is dreaming of the past, the leaves still do exist in her life in a different way. This is a canvas mat board and is unframed. Born USA. I started making art at the age of 21. I was admitted on the spot to the San Francisco Art Institute upon showing the Dean of Admissions my portfolio of Thurberesque Drawings with funny captions. Much of my artistic inspiration from my flea market finds ( vintage & rare ephemera), my huge unusual vintage, children's book collection, dance & burlesque performances, icons, symbols and images from all kinds of religions and my exploration into personal relationships. Although I have a distinctive style, I have explored many mediums- collage, painting, drawing, print making & fabric design, digital art. Some of my work is pretty and decorative but I also create ugly & raw paintings. These self therapy paintings are meant to be ugly and humourous . Kitsch, fashion, phtography, film, Children's art, German expressionism, Matisse, Dufy, Nolde, Redon as well as unknown outsider & folk+ art brut artists are have contributed to my style.
