About The Artwork

This is a painting of an image of an Italian landscape. The original image came from my families cine film, which I inherited when my Uncle and Aunty passed away. I transferred the cine film to video and then onto my computer to print out for the painting. Each reproduction of the original has either exaggerated or lost some detail, color, or contrast. This step of removal, I find interesting. How reproductive technologies, both analogue and digital, impart their own emphasis on what is important to reproduce correctly given their setup and parameters. And finally, I too impart my own colors, texture and brush marks based on my current feelings.

I am a 54 year old British born painter living in France. I graduated in Fine Art at Bristol Polytechnic in 1992 and completed a Masters degree in Art education at Warwick University in 1997. I have exhibited my work in Lincolnshire, Norfolk, London, New York and across France. I describe my paintings as expressionistic. They are largely figurative and representational and are a reflection of my fascination with images that evoke a sense of intrigue. I create compositions that invite viewers to contemplate and interpret their own narratives. I want my work to transcend realism by embracing ambiguity and allowing the viewer to complete the narrative through their memories and experiences. In my recent series of paintings based around the garden pond, I explore parallels between the pond and images from the Hubble space telescope. The layers of refracted and reflected light look to me like distant galaxies in a self contained universe where imagination intertwine with memories and dreams. For the past fifteen years I have worked making electronic sculptures but have now returned to painting full time for a more immediate tool for expression.
