About The Artwork

from the "Reservoir Dogs" series, 2013 photo-based art Oil hand-painted print on satin The reservoir dogs and the parlor morals In 1930s, the term ‘parlor socialist’ was coined amid the American left intellectuals mad about Trotskyism- Leninism to synonymize highbrow phrase-mongering, frondeurism and social aggression. In essence, the artistic world is a heavenly garden inhabited by these fancy creatures thus far. Clothed in tinsel and comfort, this aggression relays its revelations while awaiting immediate response. But what arouses those mad dogs in reality? This is exactly the Vita Buivid’s question that she hurls as a fragmentation grenade at the line of parlor revolutionaries – those who give out sharp liberal phrases and uncompromising statements. As it often happens, the loudspeaker’s revelation is a bark per se. Even if it contains some indications, instructions or assertions, it is no more than just a loud sound. It is worth thinking over this irritative sound: after all, it is also a form of meditative knowledge. Only by imagining the sound of the ‘dumb’ canvases we can perceive the revelation of the ‘speaking’ watercolors where the voice is conveyed through a comic strip transliteration. The statements and scraps of the phrases are brought together into collection that the doggies (resembling, by the way, some characters of the Kukryniksy) scream out. This allusion is hardly accidental expressing rather the author’s spirit of irony. Vita Buivid opens thereby the door into the world of well-groomed Maltese and pug dogs that exist in every artistic congregation. Marshall McLuhan once noted that “In a culture like ours, long accustomed to splitting and dividing all things as a means of control, it is sometimes a bit of a shock to be reminded that, in operational and practical fact, the medium is the message». Vita Buivid offers the classification of such a medium. She is categorical and ironic at the same time because an artist is entitled to look over the heads and preferences of the community. And if her judgments are insolent, they deserve to be regarded at least as a gallery manifestation. Are you really afraid of being bitten, or of transmittable rabies? Render unto the Art the things that are Caesar's and then the longed-for rabies will leave the bounds of the enhanced environment – the author instructs so and seems to expect our understanding. Whether the patient recovers may not be the case, but what his friends will see a doctor is quite evident. As evident as the fact that Vita Buivid counts on the awakening of those who seek for the aesthetic and try to burst through the squall of mad barking.

An alternative exhibition project, started in 2012 in Moscow (Russia). The project started as an artist-run gallery, inhabiting traditions of alternative formations of the 1980s. The «Monthly Payment» project conducts research on pricing in contemporary art from the first person. Every month there is a thematic show. Artists attach to their works receipts for any common expenses that match the cost of an art piece. It's not the cost of production of exact work (canvas, paint), but something of common life: electricity bills or checks for petrol. Addressing the question of price is the aspect not only of the market but also of the metaphysical relations. Indeed, as a unified settlement system is brought into the picture, in the minds of some it negates the personal accountability and creates a model for the free conversion of ethics. This certainly concerns the mainstream viewer, not versed in the nuances of the art world. The direct interaction with the world of visual art puts more tangible issues on the agenda. For example, what constitutes the cost of an artwork? On one hand, the price of an art object is a rhetorical question. This is because it occasionally seems that in each particular case of a sale, the calculation formula is basically written on the spot. Besides, it incorporates many case-specific unknowns. What is more important to take into account: the relevance or the weight of an artwork? The wholesale purchase or the status of the collector? However, this is an erroneous ideology, partly constructed by the jealous, petty bourgeois, partly by the non-professionals with the currency symbols in their eyes. So on what exactly does the author base the value of an artwork when they name the price? Often an act of sale for the artist is about recognition much more than it is about financial gain. However, the chances of meeting their personal altruistic patron are close to the chances of a young maiden encountering a prince on a white stallion. When the oil prices are falling and the leading galleries are changing the nature of their activity, the artists, considered by convention to be unearthly creatures, have to become realists. So it's sometimes the very odd coefficients that find their way into the authors' calculations. First of all, the project «The Monthly Payment» develops as a study.
