“Riflessioni di Venezia” Painting

Reflections of Venice! Visiting Venice had been a childhood dream, even more so since becoming an artist, and avid painter. So many artists including two of my favorites Sargent and Duveneck worked and lived there. Not long ago the dream became a reality, my lovely wife and I had our first venture to the famous old city. Of course we visited many of the major attractions and dealt with the crowds. That was expected, but we knew there was so much more to see. As we slipped away from the crowds into lesser traveled passages, we were not disappointed. The atmosphere and scenery of Venice is awe inspiring, especially for an artist. And this scene was one of many I desired to paint. A calm quiet corner, semi isolated from the onslaught of tourists and abundant boat traffic. Across from an “osteria” where we enjoyed a delightful Venetian lunch we watched colorful reflections from several of the timeworn buildings gently ripple across the water. To our left at water’s edge was a solitary door which appeared rarely used? Maybe a hidden entry into a private garden or simply forgotten? Next to the door a cascade of flowery vines flowed down from over the top of the red stone wall to the cool brackish green water below. Behind the vines was a narrow arch, a foot bridge that connected two of the buildings. These structures looked as if they were floating and were gently moored together by the bridge. It was a captivating scene, one which allowed me to share a small moment in time of our wonderful adventure in paint.
