Contact us.Olena Sloboda is a contemporary Ukrainian artist based in Lviv whose atmospheric abstract paintings explore the emotional relationship between color, light, memory, and inner perception. Working primarily in oil on canvas, she creates immersive compositions inspired by horizons, mountains, nocturnal landscapes, and the shifting emotional states connected to nature and human experience.
Sloboda studied at the Lviv National Academy of Arts between 2007 and 2013, specializing in costume design and graduating with distinction. Before fully dedicating herself to painting, she worked in the fashion industry and founded her own successful youth clothing brand. This background continues to influence her artistic language through a refined sensitivity to rhythm, texture, structure, and visual balance.
Her artistic process is highly intuitive and centered on the emotional impact of color and atmosphere. Rather than depicting specific places, Sloboda creates what she describes as “internal landscapes” – emotional spaces where memory, silence, movement, and perception intersect. Mountains, horizons, and light become symbolic elements reflecting psychological states and inner transformation.
A distinctive aspect of her technique is the complete rejection of traditional brushes. Instead, the artist constructs her paintings using palette knives, rollers, sponges, and soft materials that create layered surfaces, atmospheric diffusion, and highly tactile textures. These material processes give her works a dynamic physical presence that changes depending on light and viewing distance.
Her paintings balance expressive energy with restraint, combining sculptural impasto, luminous color transitions, and spacious compositions that invite contemplation. Many of her works explore the tension between darkness and illumination, silence and movement, emotional pressure and calmness.
Sloboda’s work has been exhibited internationally in Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Spain, Ireland, Germany, Estonia, Canada, Poland, and the United States, including participation in Swiss Art Expo, Miami Art Week, and a solo exhibition at ZAG Gallery in 2026.
