About The Artwork
River Avon was created with artist-made acrylic-based paint. The paint I make is super-saturated with pigment which produces exceptionally bright colors. The image ground is composed of a thin layer of porcelain which coats a wooden substrate. Some paintings are manifested from visual memory where as others are constructed from mental images formed during the painting process in response to stimulus in the studio such as music and audio recordings. I painted this image shortly after a visit to Stonehenge in the UK. The composition is based on a map of the site detailing all the features surrounding Stonehenge: the river; Amesbury; the Avenue; and locations of round barrows. The painting and colors grew out of that map-like drawing.
