Painting: Tempera and Oil on Canvas. This Artwork was one of the paintings i made for the exhibition The Ecstacy of Saint Teresa that was held in the Amos Anderson Art Museum, In Helsinki in autumm 2016. My interest was to interpret spiritual ecstasy as part of the creative process both physically and emotionally. The exhibition’s main themes included the self and renunciation of it. Artists must sometimes emphasize the self and be present in their artworks, but simultaneously must lose themselves and distance themselves from their works. The creative process has a decisive impact on the self, and the boundary between artist and artwork is not often clear. A state of ecstasy can be achieved, for instance, by concentration, repetition and transcendence of physical barriers. The idea stems from conversations in the studio between Sara Orava and Stiina Saaristo about the links between contemporary art and mysticism. The exhibition takes its name from Saint Teresa of Ávila, a 16th-century Spanish mystic, who achieved a state of ecstasy and a sense that she had become one with God. Reading Julia Kristeva´s works played important role in the painting process. Seeing sliding colours in drapery of the Colmar Altarpiece was also essential. Historical pigments like genuine lead white and cinabre were used in this painting.

Finland
I am an Finnish artist living and working in Helsinki. I have worked as an artist for 16 years now. My great interest is in painting and drawing. I have previously painted human faces, human bodies, and body parts. Over the last few years, the human figure has been replaced by drapery composition and a decorative, abstract form. The fabric fold is a simple model, yet endlessly fascinating in its ambiguity. It has dents, holes and surface, just like a human being. It shelters and it breathes, it's changing and changeable. I'm presenting an abstraction, at once an emotion and a physical experience. The union between eye and hand is an essential one. I have a model before me, and yet the end result might be very abstract. Whilst painting, I feel like being present both in my body and in the work. Touching the painting, I touch my own being. Whatever it is that I'm painting, that something is at once fascinating and intimidating. It hurts and it caresses, it changes its shape and it expresses itself in different things and different people. At times, it is lucidly manifest in a painting.
