Running Down a Dream Painting

This belongs to my At the Edge of All We Have Built series: Visually, the series takes a cue from scenic turnouts—those delightful opportunities to pull off our highways, get out of the vehicle, and walk to the very edge of our infrastructure so that we may gaze at the sheer beauty of nature as it sprawls before us. What if we move off planet—why would we not still build those opportunties? A chance to view a particularly stunning nebulae, galaxies, birthplaces of stars. The characters here are mostly in a contemplative isolation, alone with the vista and their thoughts and questions. And, like the silhouettes common to folktale illustration, they are anonymous and therefore can be any of us, all of us. Underlying this are two concepts of time: One) Chronos time which refers to seconds and minutes—its what we use when we say the meeting begins at 11:00am or the movie starts at 7:30pm. And the other is kairos time. The definition of kairos is “a time when conditions are right for the accomplishment of a crucial action; the opportune and decisive moment.” Kairos time is where all the characters of my At the Edge of All We Have Built find themselves. These pieces are specifically about teens immersed in a profound experience of kairos time—a shift from childhood into young adulthood where direct awareness of that which is bigger than themselves produces solemn awe—signaling that the “conditions are right … that this is the opportune and decisive moment.”
