About The Artwork

I am inspired by what surrounds me. This is one of the rare works that can be seen as a city-impression. However, I don't want to impose my vision nor impressions. Texture and material structure this work with force yet sensitivity. And that what is what is important to me.

Gerda Jacobs was born, raised, and educated in the Netherlands, but since 1985, she lives in France. “All things have their beauty, but not everyone can see them” - Confucius. Bringing this beauty to light is the precept adopted by Gerda Jacobs for her artistic activity. She is a visual artist, who lives and works in the south of Touraine. Gerda is continuously searching for new possibilities of expression, pushing her own limits, looking for new types of material to use in her work. She works in an abstract way, using ordinary materials, without any artistic designation such as zinc or concrete.... Raw materials that can seem tough and emotionless to which she gives new meaning and direction. She wants to highlight their sensitivity. Gerda directs us to what surrounds us, to the things that we so often pass by without noticing and without even looking at. Her work plays with the contrasts between materials and spaces, creating tension, suggesting movements, symbolizing purity, beauty and freedom. She has developed a very personal technique, drawing inspiration from engravers, using acid on zinc plates. She imposes her designs on the material, but the material also interacts in its own way. Her colour palette is deliberately limited, preferring black and white tones, thus favouring form and composition. The viewer is not influenced by colour and is facing purely material and impression. Between pure abstraction and figuration, her work refers to a contemplative and serene vision of the world.
