About The Artwork

In celebration of recent efforts to decriminalize entheogenic plant medicines, I have been painting a series of interpretive portraits of trailblazing pioneers of the psychedelic sixties. In this portrait of Timothy Leary, one of the radical Harvard psychologists who helped popularize the therapeutic use of psychedelics in the 1960s, I tried to capture his flamboyant style of advocating people use LSD and mushrooms to tune in and drop out.

Timothy White is a self-taught artist who specializes in depicting shamanic and entheogenic themes in a magical realism style. Born and raised in India, he has lived in California and Oregon for the last forty years, where he founded and edited a small magazine, "Shaman's Drum," which documented shamanic traditions around the world. He began painting illustrations for the magazine, and he launched a career in painting after retiring.
