This painting is my interpretation of a picture I took from the top of a staircase. The picture was taken on the south hemisphere where the warm whether permits to build open staircases in apartment buildings.

The day was bright and sunny ; the sun coming from the outside painted, in beautiful shades, the shapes and lines of the structures surrounding the staircase. I took several pictures that I used to compose one painting.

Before I started working on this painting I made a plan and drew a scheme of the shapes and colors that will go on it. I limited my self to three hues.

Little that I knew that during the painting process an inner sense of freedom would give me permission to play with the shapes and forms that the sun painted for me that afternoon. I created, as I went. I continued even when I was getting off the scheme I had planned for the painting.

What I learned while working on this painting? I learned ( which is very important to me ) that when in doubt wait. Think it over. Do not rush Sonia!

I am happy with the results I got. I hope that you as much as I do will find that the staircase is a fantasy of shapes and colors.

By training a psychiatrist, Sonia is a self-taught artist born in Peru. Currently retired, she lives in Ontario Canada. Many years ago, an intrinsic need for painting arose in me. I was felt moved by an interior force to look for brushes and pour my soul on sheets of canvases, paper, etc. Right then, I began to dedicate the few hours of my free time to immerse myself into my new discovery. I started by challenging myself with watercolors. I also tried myself in oils. Still, most of my work today is done in acrylics. As for my subjects, in the course of this discovery; I found inspiration in portraiture, nude, and landscape. Not long ago, I discovered abstract painting. Since, I spend my days enjoying this magical world. A world of color and unlimited imagination. I discovered that abstract is the kind of art that jealously hides all its rules and laws. To me, abstract painting is challenging, but it’s a challenge that makes me happy with myself. But most importantly, through this challenge, I reconciliate with the universe and with my own existence. Looking at my art it is easy to appreciate my love for color. Color makes paintings expressive. Contrasting colors evoke the mixed, often opposite feelings that sometimes overwhelm us. Bright colors subtly flirt with the eye and elicit positive emotions in us.
