About The Artwork

Shifting back and forth from geometric to fluid. Using functional objects around the house to create prints- like gardeners hose pipe, dustbin cubicle, cleaning mop, chair etc. Collecting bubble wrap, cardboard, recycled paper, and thermocol as an evening ritual from the day's delivery. There are prompts given by the printing process that lead to creating abstract form through paint. Line, form, impressions, textures, shapes help carve out a new language between light and colour. What starts to form is a sort of interdependence between two mediums. She started experimenting in a dark room, meshing cyanotype photography into painting. What came out was deeper layers and understanding how shapes fit together like building blocks. The space dimmed her sight, challenging her to be more intuitive, focusing on her other senses. There was an acute awareness, a letting go and total trust in the process. Through discovery and observation, cyanotype became a blueprint for her work. To further understand and acknowledge colour and how it interacted with cyanotype, she started exercising albers techniques of colour theory. Different palettes, lighter and darker hues, complimentary colours, gave an entirely new experience to the process. Through these limitations, a new found principle added dimension to these works.

Nanaki was born and brought up in New Delhi, after completing her undergraduate in Fine Arts from Lasalle College of the Art, Singapore she decided to take a break from art making, reconnecting with her practice after almost 6 years. Now she lives out of her studio (grandparents outhouse) and calls it her safe space for learning, creating and imagining. Her body forms the most integral part of her performance (painting) and being in touch with her feelings is key. She follows a movement of energy within her body which forms the starting point to her work. While producing she is in a constant state of flux, working on change - letting go of old belief systems, habits and patterns. Her approach is almost never planned, but a basic idea of colour, light and space is known through instinct and organic disorder.
