Sansara Painting

The doctrine of it on the Indian subcontinent existed long before the birth of the Enlightened Buddha and before the advent of Buddhism. The first mention of Samsara is found in the Vedas of the Upanishads, where the laws of the universe are explained. We submit to the merciless law of karma, in which the higher beings are in eternal Nirvana, and all the others living on earth, poisoned by the poisons of sin, are in an endless rotation of rebirth. Samsara brings only suffering, and the purpose of all things is to find a way out of it and fall into a state of eternal bliss. The contemplator of the picture, it turns out, found a way out, in a sense.
