About The Artwork

This piece is on a deep edged stretched canvas and can be hung as it is with a D-ring and string on the back. Not for the first time, I have been inspired by the incredible ballet dancer Kylie Shea ,I love to paint movement and posture in an ongoing attempt to capture dance on canvas. It’s all work in progress… Based on a recent IG story I was inspired to create a piece that brought everything that goes into ballet all together as well as Kylie’s excellence. Dance as an art form is beautiful but to get to the level Kylie has got to, such a discipline doesn’t come without years and years of hard work, pain, failure, sweat, blood and tears. I wanted to capture that feeling. Something that brought colours together but created a messy structure to have beauty shining through in moments. The ‘bars’ across the image are the practice bars that become such a friend and foe to a dancer. In the beginning of this piece I literally threw ‘blood’ (paint) onto the canvas, I wanted it to be visceral and the work be palpable. The title comes from Kylie’s book of the same name. The story follows a young girl named little Q who dreams of becoming a ballerina and the many important life lessons she learns from her teacher through classical ballet training. It’s beautifully illustrated by artists from all around the world.

Ryan is a Brighton & Hove based portrait artist who now works almost exclusively in oil paint. He completed a degree in Art & Design and Media Studies back in the late 90s. It was 2019 when he decided to put a 15-year career in publicity aside to once again feed his creativity and pick up a paint brush. His portraiture comes from a fascination with people and their emotional motivation, and he seeks to find the real person behind the face that we show to the world. Sometimes all it takes is a look in the eye or a slight curve of the mouth to capture the essence of a person and this is what drives his paintings. Through his work he seeks to find connection with people, hoping that they learn something about him and in turn learn something about themselves. “I’m not always interested in literal likeness when I paint a subject but in what gives a person their uniqueness. I love to paint something that brings joy to someone, and it really is my motivation to paint.” Ryan is a instinctive artist and buyer of art. If it makes him feel something he'll fall in love with it. His hope is that his work gives people that same visceral feeling. He works in his studio conveniently placed in the back garden, usually with his dog Daisy snoozing nearby.
