ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I was painting in watercolor using a black and white historical photo as source material. Inventing the color of the image overlays and emotional tone, a layer of nostalgia or sweetness. There may be a tension between the ice cream colors and the subject. The title refers to Freud's theory of screen memories, the idea that we might invent or focus on one story to cover up or forget a different story. I am inspired by the clouds in a landscape painting by Philip de Koninck that have drawn several times at the Metropolitan Museum: It is enormous in person.
