Second Coming of Christ With Two Gospel Miracles Painting

Christ is shown in glory, sitting on the throne of majesty judging the world. He is assisted by the Holy Apostles. This scene most closely corresponds to Matthews 25: "When the Son of man shall come in his majesty, and all the angels with him, then shall he sit upon the seat of his majesty. And all nations shall be gathered together before him, and he shall separate them one from another, as the shepherd separateth the sheep from the goats: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on his left. Then shall the king say to them that shall be on his right hand: Come, ye blessed of my Father, possess you the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world". The lettering "ο ΩΝ" on the nimbus means "The Being" and indicates that all things exist in Christ and nothing exists outside of Him. The group at Christ's right hand shows six Holy Apostles and Evangelist Mark. From the viewer's right to left, St. Peter and Evangelist Mark (together), St. Evangelist John, Sts James the Just, Simon the Zealot of Jerusalem, Philip, and James the Greater. Those who left scripture are shown holding it. Apostle Simon is holding a fish and Apostle James,- a scallop as their traditional symbols, Apostle Philip is holding a basket with which he helped to feed the thousands. Apostle James the Just the Bishop of Jerusalem is shown wearing his episcopal pallium. St. Peter's scripture says "we were eyewitnesses" (2 Peter 1:16). St. Mark has the scripture "he shall be saved" (Mark 13:13). St. John holds the scripture that says "In the beginning was the Word" (John 1:1). St. James the Just holds the scripture that says "save your souls" (James 1:21). The group at Christ's left hand shows the other six Holy Apostles and Evangelist Luke. From left to right we see St. Paul and Evangelist Luke (together), St. Evangelist Matthew, Sts Bartholomew, Andrew, Thomas Didymus, and Jude Thaddeus. Those who left scripture are shown holding it; others are holding instruments of their martyrdoms. St. Bartholomew is holding a flailing knife with which he was skinned; Apostle Andrew,- a diagonal cross, and Apostle Thomas - a lance with which he was killed. St. Paul's scripture says "faith, hope, charity" (1 Corinthians 13:13). St. Luke's scripture is "hail full of grace" (Luke 1:28). St. Jude holds the scripture that says "faith [delivered] to the saints" (Jude 1:3). The scene at the bottom center is traditionally known as weighing of souls. A group of angels proclaim the deliverance of judgement as a soul of a faithful is being weighed. Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist pray for the soul as Satan attempts to accuse it. The healing of the blind man, shown in the left inset, is described in Chapter 8 of the Gospel of Mark: "And they came to Bethsaida; and they bring to him a blind man, and they besought him that he would touch him. And taking the blind man by the hand, he led him out of the town; and spitting upon his eyes, laying his hands on him, he asked him if he saw any thing. And looking up, he said: I see men as it were trees, walking. After that again he laid his hands upon his eyes, and he began to see, and was restored, so that he saw all things clearly." Apostles Peter, James the Greater, and John are shown marveling at the scene. The scripture does not tell us who witnessed this miracle; I chose this particular group because they are the three apostles present at the Transfiguration of the Lord (Matthew 17). The scene in he inset on the right is Christ's encounter with the Gerasene Demoniac (Mark 5) "And they came over the strait of the sea into the country of the Gerasens. And as he went out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the monuments a man with an unclean spirit, Who had his dwelling in the tombs, and no man now could bind him, not even with chains. For having been often bound with fetters and chains, he had burst the chains, and broken the fetters in pieces, and no one could tame him. And he was always day and night in the monuments and in the mountains, crying and cutting himself with stones. And seeing Jesus afar off, he ran and adored him. And crying with a loud voice, he said: What have I to do with thee, Jesus the Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God that thou torment me not. For he said unto him: Go out of the man, thou unclean spirit. And he asked him: What is thy name? And he saith to him: My name is Legion, for we are many. And he besought him much, that he would not drive him away out of the country. And there was there near the mountain a great herd of swine, feeding. And the spirits besought him, saying: Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them. And Jesus immediately gave them leave. And the unclean spirits going out, entered into the swine: and the herd with great violence was carried headlong into the sea, being about two thousand, and were stifled in the sea." The same group of apostles is witnessing this scene.
