About The Artwork

Reading is a favorite activity of mine, although the word "activity" isn't exactly the right one. In my ideal reading "event," I'm sitting, sometimes even lying down—hard to call that an activity. But it can certainly be stimulating while relaxing, edifying yet entertaining. And the feel of a book, the turn of a page, the smell of ink is my personal preference. More time in that pursuit would be most welcome, but it will have to wait. I find the solitary nature of reading to be something that connects to me as an artist as well as an individual. Seeing another being absorbed in a book or newspaper—in the world yet simultaneously removed from it—fills me with memories, feelings, and thoughts of all kinds. Often, a painting comes into existence. Sue's intellect is one with an appetite for regular challenge, and the New York Times is one of the many sources that can help feed her ever-engaged mind. In seeing her reading, I was inspired to capture what I felt about that by placing her with the Times but in a world of my choosing, and a time of day that spoke to me. Hope you get the opportunity to do some reading of your own today.

born: 1958 Troy NY, USA David Arsenault was first captivated by art in 1970 when he discovered a reproduction of Edward Hopper's painting "Gas" in a grade school library book. However, it wasn't until the early 1990s--more than twenty years later--that a professor in his graphic arts program reintroduced him to Hopper's work and he decided to study painting. The early influence had it's effect on him to the degree that The Wall Street Journal wrote that "Some of Mr. Arsenault's paintings could pass for works by Edward Hopper." He studied painting at the University at Albany (NY). Since 1993 when he first began showing, David has had or participated in well over one hundred fifty local, regional, and national exhibitions. He has shown in New York, Chicago, on Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, throughout upstate New York, and now in Rockport, Massachusetts at his gallery, The Art of David Arsenault. His oil paintings, giclee prints, and reproductions are found in private and corporate collections around the world. Arsenault became a juried member of the Rockport Art Association in 2015. He and his wife relocated to the seaside town of Rockport, Massachusetts in November of 2014; in March of 2015 they opened The Art of David Arsenault Gallery; now in it's seventh year of existence, it resides at 8 Dock Square in the historic downtown Cultural District. His work is best known for large shapes, dramatic lighting, and strong color, which creates a compelling sense of mood, time, and place. Each piece presents a quiet exploration of everyday life. Arsenault strives to describe instants of shared human experience by expressing the transformational qualities of light, a sense of deeply personal encounters, and the elusive moment frozen in time.
