Art Description

Painting: cut paper on Paper.

This cut out is based on an overgrown garden on the banks of the Thames near the Cliveden Estate. I named the work after 'The Secret Garden' by Frances Hodgson Burnett' without refrenceing any particular part of the story. I was thinking of something hidden, half forgotten, locked away, covered by ivy; hence the centre of the work is empty left for the viewer's imagination.

Light and shadow are an integral part of my work. This piece is composed of a black paper cut out mounted into a deep shadow box frame allowing the silhouette to throw shadows onto the background. As the light conditions in the room change and as the viewer moves these shadows create optical effects.
