Self-Portrait as a 21st Century Adjunct Professor Painting

About the Artwork: I’ve borrowed a parrot from a disputed Van Gogh. Mine is chained, his was taxidermied to a stick. It’s so far out of the norm for Vincent’s usual realist subjects (peasants, fields) that some say it’s not his-too bourgeois. I’d argue that it’s just the sort of thing that one might come away with when dabbling with academia in 1886, which he was. Also, the palette closely matches his unsigned "Glass With Roses" of the same year. I wouldn’t have known this history if it weren’t for a stint as an adjunct art history professor. The position had positive aspects but, I’ve found the stage to be more a pillory than a spotlight. The university, over the past 15 years, has become a human chattel industry with education becoming more and more a churning of fiat currency. On a distant, shore, there’s a chryselephantine hall. Its reflection is a prison yard. In the foreground, a bough of hemlock leans in, offering Socratic comfort. A paper boat embarks, or has run aground. Who knows what its folds contain?
