About The Artwork

This portrait features a Moroccan woman with golden coins adorning their headwear, intense eyes, and a decorative necklace with various beads and symbols. The subject wears a blue garment and a red headscarf under the embellished headpiece, conveying a sense of regal or cultural significance. The Amazigh People (meaning "Free People") are the indigenous people of North Africa. I did a series of oil paintings back in the 1990s highlighting the women of this very old culture. The people are changing rapidly with the invasion of Western Modernity, so my goal was to capture the traditional dress before is disappears into history.
