On the ground appears to be simple stones at first glance, but they are actually mysterious treasures from another time. These artifacts were mixed in with thousands of dried white snail shells in a mound on the edge of the St. Johns River. It formed a whiteish shoreline near a large underwater spring in a special cove of the St Johns River. The site where I found them over 30 years ago is being reclaimed by nature with grasses and roots growing over the mound. My guess is that the large spring boil provided abundant food opportunity for native people, since the water temperature in this area remains relatively constant resulting in year-round snail feasts and good fishing. Who made the artifacts, how long were they here, and what else did they do besides leaving the empty snail shells, busted pottery, and flint rock tools? This painting has more story than it appears at first glance...
