The series "Schiffsmeldungen" is a tribute to Annie Proulx´s remarkable novel "The Shipping News". These paintings refer to striking phrases in her book and her atmospheric descriptions. It is chaos out of which we form our own meaning rather than from neat little subjects and predicates. Lightness and ease as well as a resolving beyond the boundaries A play with contrasts, restlessness and the wild, chaos and peace, abstraction and figurativeness A suspension not seen at first sight It is all about balance, contrast, form and color. Despite the turbulence and movement the eye finds zones of stability and can rest there. Layer by layer tactile surfaces are built and partly taken away again, cautiously revealing what is underneath without exposing too much. Monika Meisl Müller`s works can be regarded as a balancing act between colour, shape and line, surface and space, abstraction and object. Her paintings are built up in layers of contrasting colours, creating an optical rhythm across the visual field of the canvas. Educated in Fine Arts, History of Art and the English language she holds various teaching assignments for Art and English in and around Munich. Several longterm stays in Scotland, the US, New Zealand, Hawaii shaped her view of the world and inspired lots of Müller´s paintings. Her works can be found in private collections all over the world. Artist statement: "My concern is not with reproducing a likeness but in capturing the characteristics of a theme. Each painting undergoes constant change until the tensions of the composition are right. Energy and a sense of freedom is what I aim for, allowing the spontaneity of the marks to be interesting in their own right. I am instinctively drawn to abstraction in art because of the freedom it implies, and my work is influenced in particular by the formal experimentation of 20th century abstract painting and sculpture. Art is just a means of communication like music or literature. Other than with words or tunes, art finds its expression through colours and shapes.
