This painting was inspired by the first snow we had in December 2017 in the Barbican which coated the Conservatory Roof and Barbican Arts Centre roof. As in many of my paintings, the landscape of the Barbican is juxtaposed with that of the City in the background which on this view is the Shard and the new building on London Wall. While traditionally conceptions of the Barbican estate focus on its austere and Brutalist architectural aspects, I hope my paintings capture something of its delicacy and beauty which seemed so very clear on this first day of snow. My process involves painting on recycled reversed palette papers which give the work added texture and fragility and which fit very much with my attempt to capture a more nuanced and personalised representation of the landscape here. This work fits very much into my exploration of the role of individual creativity within an urban landscape. I hope this painting gives the viewer a chance to reflect on modernism and what it means for architecture, art and the individual.
