About The Artwork

Inspiration: Turner – ‘Snowstorm - Steamboat off a Harbour Mouth’ (1842), Oil on canvas Turner was reported to have said " I did not paint it to be understood, but I wished to show what such a scene was like ….." John Ruskin When I paint I also paint from feelings, experience & memories. I sail having helmed yachts through storms, this painting encapsulates for me the feeling I have experienced when visibility is challenging and the utter respect one must hold for nature as you are at its mercy. I often use the vibrant pyrole red as an under paint to help create an energy and vibrancy, creating a tension between the red and the more earthy umbers’ and greys. My approach to this painting has been to apply multiple layers paint, once I feel it’s starting to become a little tight in structure, I throw lots of water at the canvas to soften and loosen both blocks of colour and brush strokes. Hence the drips and looser feel to this painting represents that submission to nature, so a calmness within wildness.

I classify myself as an emerging artist having entered the world of art a little way down my career path!! I have left the corporate world behind and am now pursuing a serious career in the world of art. Having grown up in the wilds of North Norfolk, I was surrounded by seasonally changing landscapes, expansive coastlines, immense sandy beaches, large skies and infinite horizons. These have embedded in me a deep-seated need for a sense of space and infinity in my life and in my work. I paint mainly in acrylic on canvas, abstract landscapes and very much enjoy playing with colour but I decided I would challenge myself and develop a series of paintings with a very limited colour palate to try to capture mood and atmosphere. I did however sneak a little bit of colour !! My paintings are held in collections in Australia, Europe and the UK. I work from a studio in Bristol, UK.
