Many years ago I trained in the traditional style of painting. The Old Masters used dramatic light and shadows to accentuate form and enhance the composition. I often did a small daily painting for practice. I miss this traditional style of painting and there's no doubt that it's good practice. I really believe learning this style early on is foundational for a painter even if you're going to move on to abstract painting later. There is so much form, color and composition knowledge that the Old Masters knew innately that has been lost on so many modern painters. From time to time I can't resist doing a more classic style painting, but they're not always so small any more. Each of these oranges is almost as big as my hand.

The first thing people tend to remember about me as a child is that I was always drawing. Even in elementary school I always had my sketchbook. My first love was always traditional painting. I had a book about the Old Masters I copied from when I wasn't copying Star Wars characters from magazines. I received a BFA in figure drawing and graphic design with a minor in art history from Eastern Michigan University in 1987. I worked for 15 years as an art director and graphic designer. I painted and drew in my free time. In 2000, I began freelancing to find more time to paint, and by 2004, I quit advertising to paint full-time. In addition to my studio practice, I teach painting in my Sarasota FL studio.
