Art Description

Painting: Paint, Oil and Acrylic on Canvas.

Oil and screen - print on canvas. 'Spectacle' builds upon the idea's of Marxist theorist Guy Debord. In 'The Society of the Spectacle', Debord argues that the history of social life can be understood as 'the decline of being into having, and having into merely appearing.' This infers that as a result of advanced capitalism, modern society has become an inverted image of itself. What we see is merely a manifestation of what we have. In applying this critique of 'commodity fetishism' to contemporary fashion advertising, it becomes clear that the fashion image is pure representation. A representation of both personal and cultural aspirations, imposed upon the consumer as a seductive mechanism, drawing them into a lifestyle which doesn't actually exist. It is entirely virtual. The painting 'Spectacle' is a satirical take on the virtuality of fashion advertising. It's artificial dimensionality, colour saturation and high gloss finish suggests the piece could be computer generated, a fictional product of the Photoshop generation.
