The Yukon River that flows from Northern Canada to Alaska is as wide as a lake and frozen to twelve feet deep in winter. The ice begins to form in October and does not break up until May. As more ice is released from the tributaries, the river may swell to flood levels. It is an impressive and powerful sight. I hope that viewers will be reminded that we are part of the natural world, and feel a bit of the wonder I experienced during my time up north. I work in acrylic paints because they enable me to build up many layers with subtle colour shifts and texture. In my recent work such as this painting, my style is shifting away from a more detailed realistic style towards more expressionism, as I wish to capture a the energy and flow of the water.

My painting process is intuitive, building up many finely textured layers of acrylic paint to create luminous colour and flowing organic patterns of energy. Through exploring the natural world in my artwork, I seek to transcend cultural barriers and express what I value most: protecting the land, water and air for future generations. ............................................................................ I am an Canadian painter descended from the indigenous Red River Métis people, and my grandparents on the other side of the family were immigrants. I was born in Toronto in 1969, and grew up mainly on the Pacific Northwest Coast, in British Columbia. .......................................................................... As a young woman in Vancouver BC, I studied art and psychology, and sought for my sense of purpose in the city. In in the year 2000 I headed 2,000 miles north to a remote subarctic town in the Yukon Territory. In the north my artistic vision evolved in harmony with the powerful, sometimes harsh forces of the turning of the seasons, and the gentle beauty of the land. ..................................................................... After fourteen years in the Yukon, today I live once again in British Columbia, in a small town near the ocean, surrounded by the familiar coastal forest.
