Darryl Glenn Steele Artist's Biography Darryl Glenn Steele was born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1956. The oldest of four children, he attended Joelton High School where his talent was encouraged by his art teachers, and it was there that he sold his first painting and began to realize that he wanted to become and artist. He married after high school, became the father of two daughters, and while briefly attending the Watkins School of Art, he worked for a local display company and continued to pursue his painting. While he is considered to be predominantly a self-taught artist, he studied the work and techniques of several well known artists' including, Ken Davies, Paul Strisik, and Andrew Wyeth. During the late 1970's and early 1980's his work consisted mainly of oil paintings with a few watercolors, and pencil drawings. He exhibited his work at local art galleries and sidewalk art shows and by 1990 his oil paintings were represented in galleries dotted around the United States from Englewood, New Jersey to Scottsdale, Arizona, winning several awards including the Priest Lake Women's Club Award at the Central South Art Exhibition in Nashville, Tennessee- twice during the 1980's, and also Awards from the Lake Worth Art League in West Palm Beach, Florida and Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. He has had One Man Shows at The Haymarket Art Gallery, in Lincoln, Nebraska, The Tennessee Arts Commission Gallery and the Local Color Gallery, in Nashville, The Brentwood Public Library as well as the Towne Center Theatre in Brentwood, Tennessee. In 1996, he abandoned oil painting, and began to pursue his passion for climbing; traveling extensively around the western United States and it was on one of these road trips that he discovered the watercolors of Thomas Moran and became inspired to start working in watercolor instead of oil. Since that time Mr. Steele's watercolors have been well received and are included in many private and public collections across the United States as well as abroad, including the collections of The Opryland Hotel, Vanderbilt University, and the Governor's Residence in Caracas, Venezuela.
