About The Artwork

Saint Basil I, the Ryazan miracle worker, is mentioned in the Laurentian Chronicle and is on the fourth list in the ancient list of Ryazan lords. (Vasily II, † 1360, consecrated consecrated bishop in 1356 by St. Alexis, Metropolitan of Moscow, † 1378). An ancient tradition connects with the holy Bishop Basil the transfer to Ryazan of the miraculous image of the Murom Icon of the Mother of God (April 12). Saint Basil was first bishop of Murom. According to the slander of the spirit of malice, the townspeople rebelled against him, unjustly accusing them of actions inappropriate to the archpastor. Then, after a long prayer, the saint went to the Oka River, spread his episcopal mantle on the water and stood on it, holding in his hands the image of the Most Holy Theotokos of Murom. A strong wind suffered him against the current, and a few hours later he sailed to Ryazan, where he was received with honor by the Ryazan prince and people. Even during the life of St. Basil, they considered him a righteous and pious man. Long before his relics were discovered at the beginning of the seventeenth century, Ryazanians honored his memory and called them "their own intercessor, a sorrow and adversary assistant." Most often, those who go on a journey turn to him, especially on the waters, believing that he saves on the way: on land - from adversity, on waters - from drowning. Around 1540, the monk Erasmus-Yermolaus wrote The Story of Basil, Bishop of Ryazan and Murom. The acquisition and transfer of the holy relics of St. Basil, Bishop of Ryazan, was accomplished by the Ryazan Archbishop Theodorite (1605–1617). In the Time of Troubles, the Providence of God was pleased to glorify St. Basil: on June 10, 1609, his holy relics were opened and transferred to the Assumption (subsequently Christmas) Cathedral in the Kremlin of Pereyaslav Ryazan, which since the time of Bishop Jonah II of Ryazan (1522-1547) has been a cathedral. The relics of St. Basil were laid under the cover on the left choir, near the iconostasis. Then the troparion and condak were made to the saint. Since that time, the name of St. Basil "is remembered in all the churches of the Ryazan diocese." They resort to him as "their patron saint, in grief and adversity." Under Archbishop Moses (1638–1651), in 1638 a stone tomb was built over the relics of St. Basil, and above it was placed the Murom image of the Blessed Virgin Mary - “The Prayer of Basil”. It is known that at this time in Ryazan churches prayers were performed to St. Basil. On June 10, 1645, under the Archbishop of Moses, the transfer of the relics of the saint was solemnly celebrated for the first time. Archbishop Misail (1651–1655) is considered a particularly zealous admirer of the Ryazan high priest. At his command, in 1653, an inscription was made on a large silver water-sanctuary bowl: "This bowl is in Pereyaslav Ryazansky, in the cathedral church of the Assumption and the holy martyrs Boris and Gleb, and also in the saints of our father Basil, bishop of Ryazan, the miracle worker." In 1655, Saint Basil was depicted on a silver cross with Saint John the Forerunner and Saint Jonah, Metropolitan of Moscow. In 1712, under Metropolitan Stefan Yavorsky, a stone chapel was erected over the site of the initial burial of St. Basil, near the Borisoglebsk church, with the zeal of the clerk Nikita Altukhov. In the years 1722-1723 under Emperor Peter I, a formal investigation was conducted about the saint, after which Saint Basil was depicted on the icon along with other Russian saints. Metropolitan Dimitry of Novgorod (Sechenov) when he was bishop of Ryazan (1752–1757) made a service to St. Basil, “taking into account the previously written troparion, kondak and canon”. Under him, over the relics of St. Basil, a new tomb was made like crayfish with the icon of the saint. In 1782, the cancer over the relics of St. Basil was magnificently adorned by the Archbishop of Ryazan and Zaraisk Simon (Lagov) (1778–1804). In 1810, the Archbishop of Ryazan and Zaraisk Feofilakt (Rusanov) followed the Decree of the Holy Synod on the celebration of St. Basil on All Saints Week. On October 4, 1836, a new monument was solemnly unveiled at the site of the acquisition of the relics of St. Basil, erected by the zeal of the clerk of the Borisoglebsk church Simeon Panov. In 1871, Archbishop Alexy (Rzhanitsyn, 1867–1876) was the first...
