About The Artwork

Close to the village of Barnetby Lincolnshire (mentioned in the Doomsday book of 1086) is a wood and a set of ancient gallows. These were erected in the 17th Century on the orders of King James I as a deterrent to two local feuding families - the Ros's from Melton Ross and the Tyrwhits from Kettleby. This feud had lasted over 300 years, and James I ordered that any subsequent death as a result of this long-standing feud would be treated as murder and the offender would be hanged from the gallows. The adjacent woods are locally known as Gallows Wood. Part of the ongoing Classics series of paintings depicting a place a few miles from my home in Lincolnshire England. Painting is done on Professionally made high quality cross braced wood frame on stretchered Linen canvas. Painting has sides painted so may be hung without frame is so desired. Its quite a large piece (40x30 inches). Please note photographs are taken in dull daylight using a canon 450D in 'flash off' mode with absolutely no editing. These are the most honest pictures I can take but due to monitor differences that you view with there maybe slight changes.

Simon Jones was born in Grimsby, England. Once the second largest fishing port of its kind in the world, Grimsby sits directly on the North East coast fringed by what is known as 'The Lincolnshire Wolds'. He studied Fine Art on a Foundation Course at Grimsby Art College back in the late 70's and went on to study at Degree Level at Kingston Polytechnic London and later at Hull University gaining a BA Hons Degree in Fine Art. He has lived and worked in Lincolnshire most of his life and feels a close connection with its unique landscape. "My passion is Oil Painting primarily my local Landscape (Lincolnshire Wolds). I have lived all my life in and around this landscape and use it as an inexhaustible and inspiring material for my painting. I have a deep love of Fine Art stretching back over 40 years now. Whenever I get the chance I take the opportunity to visit Art Exhibitions and Galleries both home and abroad. I endeavour to imbue my landscapes with mood and melancholy saturating the canvas with varying layers of paint in order to convey tone and texture in what I see. Remember: Look now while life lasts ...
