Stay In Your Place Painting

"Stay in Your Place" was influenced by my experiences since the prevalence of the Black Lives Matter movement began. I have encountered many instances both personally and on a broader scale of non-POCs who not only enjoy the various aspects of black culture, but have benefited & even appropriated it at times, however they have not publicly shown up for or supported the movement to end systemic racism & violence against minorities. They are fine with black people as long as we "stay in our place" and entertain them, but it's a problem if we refuse to continue to be mistreated & have acts of violence & discrimination perpetrated against us. This piece was created in a vintage "blackface"/"jigaboo" style, hearkening back to the days where African Americans were in put in positions of being entertainment but were expected to take whatever abominable treatment was given to them and other POCs. The stereotypical caricature is displayed as a necklace, further showcasing that some non-POCs enjoy seeing minorities in forms of entertainment and seek ownership of our experience and creativity, yet POCs speaking truth to power is deemed unacceptable.
