About The Artwork

This painting was inspired by an encounter wth the power and danger of a summer storm. My friend and I cycled to a lake in the open countryside of Brandenburg one sweltering, humid afternoon. As we arrived all the locals were hastening away due to an approching storm. We regreted ignoring their example when shortly after the worst electrical storm we´d ever experienced broke over our heads. It continued for about an hour and we didn´t think we´d survive as we sheltered under a small wooden awning on top of a picnic table. It seemed, as I was painting it, an appropriate metaphor for turmoil in life and I think most people can understand the feeling of being in a desparate situation and swimming for a shore that seems so far away. I hope the energy atmosphere of imminent danger comes across throught the colours and vigourous application of oil paint.

Noël O´Callaghan lives in Berlin where she has a studio in the culturally vibrant area of Neukölln. She also spends time painting in the landscape of Ireland where she grew up. The main focus of her work is the lived moment and how to accurately render its fleeting spontaneity with fluidity and economy. She paint in both oil and watercolour and her palette combines vibrant Fauvist hues with more muted tones inspired by the Irish landscape. Her work favours energy over academicism but the accuracy of gesture acquired through daily drawing and life-drawing is very important to her. She grew up in an artistic household ,her father was the noted irish painter Diarmuid O’Ceallachain (1915-1993). www.diarmuidoceallachain.com She has also worked as an actor and musician and often mixes classical art forms with live public performance. She has exhibited widely in both juried and solo shows and her work can be found in in private and public collections in Ireland, Germany, UK, China and USA.
