About The Artwork

The book "Life of Pi" by Yann Martel served as a source of inspiration for this blue green painting with black and yellow strokes. The storms Pi had to face on the big ocean, and the feelings he had during these moments, inspired the artist to make this artwork. The texts are written with black foil instead of leaf metal. Because the foil matches the colors of the painting, the texts are very subtle and will only stand out when it reflects the light. "Dawn came and matters were worse for it. Because now, emerging from the darkness, I could see what before I only felt, the great curtains of rain crashing down on me from towering heights and the waves that threw a path over me and trod me underfoot one after another." (From 'Life of Pi by Yann Martel) The painting is ready to hang. Because the sides are painted there is no need for a frame.

Have you ever considered how special it is that we can read? Text is nothing but a series of characters in a row, to which we have assigned meanings. We can experience a whole range of feelings and emotions just by looking at those signs. From an early age I have been fascinated by letters. When I look at letters, I see beautifully designed figures. What I find so fascinating is that we don’t or hardly don’t see those figures anymore, once we can read. You are immediately transported to the world behind the letters. Based on this fascination, I want to show how text and image intertwine in my head. How they enter into a symbiosis with each other. I do this by making paintings in which I interweaves image and text. I use gold leaf and silver leaf that reflect the light in a different way each time you walk by. This brings the painting to life and makes it look different every time you look at it.
