Layers of sediment deposited, one on top of another. The lower layers gradually squeezed and compressed by the weight of the upper ones. Further down still, the pressure and heat of the earth's inner parts cause changes to the physical or chemical form of the rock - metamorphosis. Strata is Inspired by the layers of sedimentary rock exposed by the relentless energy of the sea. I love to walk by the ocean and my eye is drawn as much by the rocky formations to one side as the ocean to the other. The subtle sheen of silk fibres draws the eye and closer inspection reveals the three dimensional depiction of "blocky" rock formations towards the lower portion of the artwork. At 142 cm x 55 cm, Strata looks equally striking hung vertically or horizontally.

I am a contemporary fibre artist residing in New Zealand, creating abstract artworks. Inspired by a fascination with tiny or hidden details, nuances of light and emotion in our physical and spiritual environment, my work is often informed by my background in engineering. Having always been passionate about expressing my creativity, for the last 5 years I have taken a medium that is traditionally “crafted” and developed my own technique and artistic voice. I find the process of painting and sculpting with unspun fibres fascinating with every new piece that I create. There is an alchemy to the process of transforming wisps of fibre into something with form, structure and strength. Feltmaking is an ancient art form which allows the artist to explore a subject in a unique way. Incredibly fragile at the outset of the process, becoming increasingly tactile and physical as the fibres intertwine and lock together. Becoming fascinated with the fragility and beauty of the fibre art in the early stages of the process, I have recently developed a method of creating and capturing unique, ephemeral fibre art works. These I reproduce as fibre art prints.
