About The Artwork

For me, the Covid lock down began towards the end of March 2020. I relish painting the figure but it was not practical to find models or references during that time. Consequently, I sourced tintype photographs from secondary markets featuring one or more figures captured on metal plates using the 19th century wet plate collodion photography process. In my opinion, there are parallels to how American people lived between the 1850s and 1890s to present time. These parallels are based on aesthetics, culture or politics. This composition is initially based on an ineffable connection to a 1/6th plate ferrotype of a man playing the violin. Since tintypes are typically in a range of sepia tones, I enjoy the challenge of interpreting those values into different hues while attempting to create a balance between loose and tight brush work.

Colby DeGraaf (b. 1974, St. Petersburg, FL) is a studio painter that creates compositions focused on contemporary interpretations and representations of the figure. He currently maintains a studio in South Florida and exhibits work in commercial and public galleries throughout the United States. “My work aims to bring connections to a range of evanescent moments by employing the human form in literal and figurative constructs.” DeGraaf states that his studio practice is centered around Gestault principles of perception, specifically figure-ground relationships. Compositions are initially built up to show straight forward representations of figures and forms then his work goes through a deconstruction process to achieve a push or pull between proximities in the picture plane.
