Thinking about our disconnection from reality in post-internet culture, my work often explores the potential for kitsch to have genuine cultural value and a provide a needed engagement with authenticity. As art critic Dave Hickey said, “One either prefers the honest fakery of the neon or the fake honesty of the sunset - the undisguised artifice of culture or the cultural construction of ‘authentic’ nature.” Kitsch is honest about its artifice and appeals to our innate senses, and in that, there can be said to be authenticity. This piece is similarly honest about it's artifice; the faux fur and bright, synthetic coloured dyes in the materials are unapologetic about their artificial nature. The tactile qualities of the piece also appeal to the viewers innate senses- specifically the sense of touch.
