Painting: Paint on Paper.
My work centres around structure and space in the landscape and the process of working is important in my practice.
I begin by drawing the subject on location. Therefore I have made many drawings whilst visiting different railway stations in the UK. My drawings are about recording my response to the subject. I enjoy using experimental drawing. For example - keeping the pastel or pencil in contact with the paper throughout a drawing or working with my eyes closed. In this way I seek to record the essence of the subject rather than copy every detail.
Later, back in my studio in Bath, I develop these drawings into paintings. This painting is one of a series and demonstrates the way my limited colour palette complements the energy of my mark making. By painting and repainting, I build up layers which both construct and deconstruct the subject and encourage it to teeter between representation and abstraction
The viewer is invited to complete this painting by seeking in it the essence of the place itself.
