Study in Color Painting

I finally took a real class in color theory, having relied for years on my intuition. I became fascinated with the theory of Hans Hoffmann, who taught my teacher Laura Shabott in the artist enclave of Provincetown MA in US. Hoffmann talks about the "push-pull" of colors where one color laid down on canvas lights up or tones down an adjacent color, where colors next to one another seem to imply perspective. Which colors do you think light up or tone down an adjacent color here? This is painted with pigmented wax (the ancient art of encaustic) on a 36 x 36 inch platform of reinforced plywood, unframed but ready to hang.I also used India ink to demarcate shapes and show the movement and dynamism of this piece. A good showstopper in your living or family room above a buffet or couch. Encaustic painting was 1st used to preserve and decorate ships' hulls a few 1000 years ago. Then it was used to paint pictures that were then buried with wealthy people in the ancient world. When they were discovered in the 20th century they were as vivid as the day they were painted. Wax is durable and easy to repair if an edge chips.The only thing that affects it adversely is too high heat, over 200 degrees F.
