ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I really enjoy seeing the different ways in which bridges cross our highways. This architectural structure is so often ignored as we pass under and through, but I feel they offer a new way of seeing. As you are driving, you first see the coming land through the "window" of the bridge. Then as you pass under, the bridge becomes a powerful shelter...which quickly disappears to the past. This painting is acrylic on canvas which has been attached to a panel made of 100% birch wood. The panel has been treated with archival materials and stained to a deep walnut brown. The wooden panel serves as a simplified frame. You can hang the painting directly from the box or have it professionally framed if you prefer. The colors of this painting remind me of summer...bright, hot sun and deep cool shadows. The extreme contrasts of value create a sense of fantasy. The surface of the painting is smooth and has been varnished with a slight sheen to enhance the colors.

I was once traveling with a close friend, photographing everything in sight, as any tourist does. I asked him, "Don't you want to take any photos?" He answered, "I like to remember things in my own way." What a profound statement - and one that I take seriously when I paint. My art is about remembering things . . . in my own way . . . and "disremembering" everything else. A native of Fort Worth, Texas, my artistic career began at an early age when I began painting with my mother on Sunday afternoons. Surrounded by art books, paintings and sculpture at home, I always knew I wanted to be a painter.
