It goes back to 2005, or five years after I first began visiting Cape Cod. By then, I was hooked on the Outer Cape as my favorite destination; Provincetown was where the journey ended before I began the long trek back to upstate New York. But ending the journey wasn't the goal; ensuring that I had been all the way to the "tip" of the Cape and seen as much as I could see was.

"Sun Baked" was born in April 2005, product of a visit made in autumn of the previous year to collect unsold paintings. I made sure to take the time to drive to P'town from Wellfleet. It was a crystal clear fall day; the sun encouraged an atmospheric sharpness and character that happens on the Cape regularly—one that locks my eyes onto each and every object to appreciate the play of light and shadow.

I stopped at the Pier for something to eat, and as I turned around from the counter, I saw it: the ancient sign, blasted by year after year of intense sunlight, reading "PORTUGUESE BAKERY." To further attract my eye was the Coca Cola sign at the left side—a red, iconic magnet, pulling my vision directly to it. Behind it, the Pilgrim Monument, an impressive and historic vertical tower, served as the perfect backdrop, a twin to the rooftop pipe.

That faded sign no longer hangs on the back of the building these days. It's been gone for a number of years now. Change is our only constant, or so I've heard. The good news is that delicious Portuguese treats are still delighting legions of pastry lovers, served from that very location. And taste buds rejoice!

born: 1958 Troy NY, USA David Arsenault was first captivated by art in 1970 when he discovered a reproduction of Edward Hopper's painting "Gas" in a grade school library book. However, it wasn't until the early 1990s--more than twenty years later--that a professor in his graphic arts program reintroduced him to Hopper's work and he decided to study painting. The early influence had it's effect on him to the degree that The Wall Street Journal wrote that "Some of Mr. Arsenault's paintings could pass for works by Edward Hopper." He studied painting at the University at Albany (NY). Since 1993 when he first began showing, David has had or participated in well over one hundred fifty local, regional, and national exhibitions. He has shown in New York, Chicago, on Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, throughout upstate New York, and now in Rockport, Massachusetts at his gallery, The Art of David Arsenault. His oil paintings, giclee prints, and reproductions are found in private and corporate collections around the world. Arsenault became a juried member of the Rockport Art Association in 2015. He and his wife relocated to the seaside town of Rockport, Massachusetts in November of 2014; in March of 2015 they opened The Art of David Arsenault Gallery; now in it's seventh year of existence, it resides at 8 Dock Square in the historic downtown Cultural District. His work is best known for large shapes, dramatic lighting, and strong color, which creates a compelling sense of mood, time, and place. Each piece presents a quiet exploration of everyday life. Arsenault strives to describe instants of shared human experience by expressing the transformational qualities of light, a sense of deeply personal encounters, and the elusive moment frozen in time.
