About The Artwork
A cold, wet Sunday afternoon in the early Spring of 2005, in Faversham, Kent. Shetland Trader, a general cargo ship of 75 metres in length, is berthed in a very quiet Faversham Docks. Only the water (overboard discharge) being pumped from the ship indicates any activity at all. The temperature was freezing and together with the gale force wind making life very uncomfortable, my wife and I very soon adjourned to a pub for shelter. Painted in oil on a primed cradled wooden panel, 2cm in depth. Framed in an unpainted natural light wood floater frame, 18ins X 12ins X 1.5ins.

I'm a largely self-taught artist. Art classes for a while, learning the basics, before realising that the best way of learning to paint successfully is to study the work and methods of others, and by so doing building an individual style of one's own. A little bit of many artists, but an exact copy of none of them. I paint landscapes, transport art and occasionally abstract, floral and still life. Mainly painting in oil, soft pastel and coloured pencil. I hate to be tied down to just one discipline. I have been immensely influenced by the work of Sorolla, Turner, Robert Taylor, Malcolm Root, Robert Lloyd, Peter Barker, Graham Webber, Richard Schmid, and many others.
