This bold, physical, abstract painting is based on my passion for Fell Walking in the Lake District (England, UK). As a regular visitor to the Lakes for over 30 years I have built a strong and emotional dialogue with these mountain fells. Over the decades they have become like old familiar friends. I chose to do this piece in large scale as an attempt to envelop the viewer and evoke the feelings and emotions of being in dramatic landscapes. The piece is an emotive response to the pure exhilaration I get when up a mountain. Produced on the studio floor using thin oil paints and pouring and moving around the canvas to paint without brushes, the piece evokes the sublimity of walking through valleys, mountains in all weather conditions and the constant flux these area undergo. Abstraction was the ideal vehicle for the painting as the paint has a fluidity reminiscent of flowing water, light and cloud. The painting was also filmed in my studio whilst I was being interviewed by Kevin McCloud, Channel 4 for Grand Designs TV Programme (York House, 2013). Signed on the front.

I draw my inspiration from the constant possibilities of painting and the challenge of its unpredictable nature in conveying a subject. I am most interested in the process of painting and the expression it provides, translating a depth of feeling that is both personal but also shared with the viewer. Psychotherapy has directly influenced recent work and renewed my interest in abstract expressionism with the freedom of colour, line and allowing the subconscious and memory to guide my work. My current work explores the raw emotions I have experienced through personal challenges including the corrosive effects of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), infertility and a recent incurable auto-immune disease diagnosis. Whilst these experiences are highly personal, I believe that by exploring those emotions in my work I am creating a voice where one might normally be at risk of being suppressed and hidden.
