About The Artwork

I have always been interested in science, these paintings to me represent the sun. Light I know from physics arrives in packets, it seems perfect then that this piece is presented in packets as a group of paintings depicting the light from the sun in one single group. I have used organic epoxy resin on some of them to enhance the colour and reflexiveness. I have tried to pair down the paintings to a simple statement about the light from the sun presented as a cluster. The colours I have used to develop this yellow, allow the deceptively simple brush strokes to have character and flow, in some of them you may notice brush hairs. There is no single focal point, the viewer is invited to let your eyes wonder across the cluster and concentrate on any point you would like. I've used a wide Japanese brush to give an even thickness throughout the brushstrokes making the a focal point the paint itself.

Mark Baldwin is a dancer and multi media artist specialising in Painting and it's relationship to Choreography. He was born in the British Colony of Fiji. As a young child his Fijian mother took him with her to the ballet which she loved. At Art School he fell in love with the American Abstract Expressionists and the work they were doing with the great American choreographer Merce Cunningham and the composer John Cage. The scholarship he won in his first year at art school paid for the extensive training he undertook to become a highly trained dancer. Today Mark Baldwin makes lush often paired down paintings. They take the viewer into a world of a shapes which to him represent the human body, curving or bending into the picture space. The paintings go beyond the body evoking moods, gardens, sunlight and stories. He works between London and Silves in the Algarve Portugal. The paintings exist in time and space changing with the light. They represent a life time of work. The struggle for perfection and musicality, they carry memories and experiences pulled from the black hole of creativity. Presently he is Academic Visitor University of Cambridge in the Department of Psychology working with Professor Nicola Clayton FRS. The give lectures and demonstration on the nature of creativity, perception and Mental Time Travel.
