Stately homes always inspire me. Looking at these houses today makes you wonder what life must have been like living in one. Houses today are cramped, overlooked, small and featureless. Looking at these magnificent old houses it is almost difficult to believe that they really exist. This painting is one of a series of stately houses that I will be painting. I wanted the sky to have an almost surreal feel to it, to reflect the almost surreal lifestyle that must have accompanied the people living there, and the closing of an era that only exists in movies and dreams for most people.
