About The Artwork

There's a story in the gospels where Jesus' disciples need tax money, so He tells them to go catch a fish. They do, and the money they need is in the fish's mouth. I love the absurdity of the story, and how unexpected the solution is. I created this painting on a cracked fragment of an old wood beam that I found in the trash. The bands of painting wrap around the beam, but stop at the cracks, leaving a gap. I've painted tiny oil paintings within each band of color, roughly evoking a landscape. Each painting functions like a little window with a slice of landscape or skyscape visible through the frame. I think of these as "mental landscapes" -- what the mindscape of my brain might look like on any given day. I love compartments and segments. I love the soothing order of geometry around the disorder of the wood surface and the abrupt changes of the individual oil paintings.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

I create compartmentalized oil paintings on surfaces such as discarded wood scraps, prepared paper, or canvas. The paintings are what I call "mental landscapes" -- both evoking nature and an internal abstract world. I think of each compartment as a window -- a small glimpse of something bigger beyond the visible. The rows of painted segments represent time lapses, and may function sequentially like an abstract comic book. The segments often wrap around the surface, terminate unexpectedly and disappear. My studio is located on the dynamic Space Coast of Florida. I'm currently Professor of Art at Eastern Florida State College, where I teach Drawing, Painting, and Design.
