This is a vibrant, colorful abstract painting done in acrylic and ink with holographic glitter. It's the first painting on canvas that I have began and finished since working almost exclusively on paper over the summer. I learned a lot of lessons from my "Entanglement" and "Thin Section" series about loosening up and treating parts of the composition sparingly while allowing other parts to build up over several layers. My technique involves brushing on a quick background layer in bright, thin paints. While keeping the painting wet I draw on the paint with ink droppers, letting the ink push its way into the wet paint. Sometimes I spray a part of the painting with water to achieve a blurring effect, or to encourage flow and mixture of pigments. On the left hand side of this painting I encouraged a vast pool of mostly water to form, into which I sprinkled the holographic glitter and then dripped black ink. The black ink is very pushy and spreads across the surface of the water quickly, pushing the glitter along with it. On the top and final layer I used squeeze bottles filled with acrylic paint and squeezed out some intestinal formations and biomorphic shapes like cell cultures. I love the contrast between the large dark area and the bright saturated colors in this painting. I also like how thinly the paint is applied in areas; you can easily make out the tooth of the underlying canvas. "That Which Grounds Us Also Sets Us Free" is painted on a high quality 1 1/2" profile stretched canvas with the fasteners on the back so they do not show. The edges of the canvas are left raw and show drip marks which are like artifacts of the painting process. My personal preference is to leave these drip marks visible, but I can also paint over them at your request or you can have the painting framed.
