This derelict building is known as The Arcade Theatre but was originally The Pantageas. Built over 100 years ago in Los Angeles, it is a small, simple frontage with classical details. The relief capital on its boxy columns is exceptionally delicate and leafy and... covered in soot. I captured the form of the details with a combination of paint, ink and bleach and the effect, while having been painted loosely, is incredibly dimensional. Subtle blues and browns add hits of color. Ink, bleach, acrylic, on linen. 48" x 36". This piece is painted in mixed media on a coarse weave linen ground, stretched over a wood panel. The materials enhance the texture of the linen by bleaching and darkening the fibers. Paint is used only for subtle coloring and the brightest white highlights. The linen wraps the edges of the panel. The subject of the work is the derelict, yet lovely Vaudeville house known as the Arcade Theatre (opened in 1910 as the Pantages Theatre) in Los Angeles' historic theater district on Broadway.
