About The Artwork

The triumphal arch at the South end of the forum is the Arch of Titus, which was erected to celebrate the defeat of the Judeans and the looting of Jerusalem. From this view, the mass of the Forum is a chaotic confusion of masonry and trees with only the Arch of Titus clearly seen in the distance. My aim was to capture the confusion of the middle ground and the clear white shape of the Arch of Titus. The stacked perspective is more line a medieval painting than like a modern one.I hope that the viewer will feel the complexity and richness of Rome, and the startling clarity of the ancient Roman monument. When you think that every triumphal arch we know, like the Washington Square arch in New York or the Arc de Triomphe in Paris is directly descended from this one - it's amazing that you can stand and see it in the middle of the Forum. This painting is painted in a very free style, with lots of indefinite shapes to evoke the complexity and confusion of the Forum.
