This work is the beginning of a story or a painting series, in which a student seeks her own identity and a sense of history by tracing her Argentinian heritage. The student's character is based on Mafalda, who is the main character from a popular Argentinian cartoon. This female student points to the location of Argentina, a country that has been suppressed in terms of its powers by the external forces. The American classroom is the open symposium and a place for debate and discussion, in which the students and the teacher engage in meaningful dialogue about the history of Latin America and in particular Argentina, in relation to the western powers who control and dominate the globe. Who is she and where does she come from? Where is she headed, and is the American Dream still alive for the Latinx people? These are some of the thoughts that the artist, who herself is Argentinian American, engaged with as she painted this image.
